Colombia registered the highest cocoa production in history, in the last cocoa year

The National Government allocated $ 20,500 million for the National Cacao Renovation Plan this year, with which a four thousand hectare renovation project is being executed with Fedecacao and the Cocoa Fund with an investment of $ 7,500 million and loans are being leveraged for $ 13,000 million, through a renewal LEC.

To date, the Cacao production chain has 17,106 producers linked to the Contract Agriculture Strategy, with total sales of agricultural products estimated at $ 171 billion pesos.

This year, the Congress of the Republic approved the Law that allows Colombia to join the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO), thereby obtaining great support to achieve competitiveness.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Rodolfo Zea Navarro, was very pleased with the result of cocoa production in the last cocoa year (October 2020 to September 2021), which is the largest in the entire productive history of the grain in Colombia, with 70,205 tons produced.

Minister Zea, highlighted the announcement made by the National Federation of Cocoa Growers (Fedecacao), which also reported that when comparing with the previous cocoa year (2019-2020), there was an increase of 9.2% in production, registering 64,281 tons of production back then.

Said the head of the agricultural portfolio at the time which highlighted the joint work with the links in the chain and the National Government that mark these excellent results.

In this sense, the official recalled that the Cocoa Renovation Plan, which for this year was launched on April 28 in the municipality of Carmen de Chucurí (Santander), aims to renew nearly 10,000 hectares of unproductive cocoa crops throughout the country, which contribute to the economic reactivation of the national cocoa sector and contribute to improving the income of the more than 52 thousand families that depend on this crop.

To strengthen the Plan this year, the Government allocated $ 20,500 million, with which the Ministry of Agriculture, together with FEDECACAO, are carrying out a 4,000-hectare renovation project, which has resources of $ 7,500 million. Additionally, the Special Credit Line for Cocoa Renewal was launched, with which it seeks to leverage loans for $ 13,000 million, with which producers can obtain liquidity and reform their crops.

The official pointed out that another mechanism with which the Government has been supporting the cocoa sector is the commercialization carried out through the Contract Agriculture strategy of the Ministry of Agriculture: “Today, we have 17,106 linked producers, with total sales estimated by $ 171 billion pesos and 52 business partners.

It is also important to highlight the approval in the Congress of the Republic of the International Cocoa Agreement that allows Colombia to enter the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO): “with this approval, the entry into the highest body of the bean worldwide, we will have more opportunities to advance in competitiveness. ”

Similarly, Minister Rodolfo Zea, highlighted the good results of cocoa exports, which report a growth in external sales of beans and preparations, which grew by 12.8%, with sales of USD 91.8 million in January. as of September 2021.

He also highlighted that Colombian cocoa has been the winner of the International Cocoa Awards in 2010, 2011, 2015 and 2019 with cocoas produced in Arauca, Nariño and Santander, and that, for this year’s edition of the international contest, we are participating with a cocoa sample that was produced in the department of Córdoba.

Colombian cocoa subsector

  8. Colombia is recognized by the ICCO as a 95% producer and exporter of fine and aroma cocoa.
